Bioinformatics is a diverse scientific concept, with both broad and specialized areas of applications and interactions with modern Structural, Molecular and Population Biology. Several genome projects including the Human Genome Project have opened new avenues for the application of Informatics to several and diverse research fields, leading to a highly dynamic nature for modern biological and biomedical sciences and the continuous development of novel computational methods for solving biological problems. Today, Bioinformatics is considered a highly evolving branch of biological sciences, with significant accolades and applications. As such, a Bioinformatician / Computational Biologist can have many opportunities of employment in both Academia and pharmaceutical, chemical biotechnology, medical and environmental industries, as well as Informatics.
With all of the above in mind, the Bioinformatics Postgraduate Programme aims to fulfill the following goals:
- The development and evolution of research and education standards in the fields of Bioinformatics and its applications.
- High quality training of scientists from other scientific fields in several Bioinformatics methods and disciplines, as well as technological applications of Informatics and Computer Science to the study of human, animal, plant and microbe genomes and proteomes.
- High quality training of skilled Bioinformaticians and Computational Biologists that will be integral in meeting the national educational, research and industry needs and that will contribute to establishing, maintaining and promoting a pan-hellenic community for Bioinfoinformatics and Computational Biology.
